How to split a bill fairly
Splitting a bill stops being awkward when everyone agrees on two numbers up front: the tip percentage, and whether the tip applies to the pre-tax bill (which most people do). This calculator then does the rest.
The tip is the bill times the tip percentage. Adding it to the bill gives the total, and dividing by the number of people gives the fair share. If drinks and desserts mean some paid for more than others, you can always settle those separately and use the calculator for the shared portion.

Worked example
A pre-tax bill of $75, tipped at 18%, split three ways.
Tip = $13.50. Total = $88.50. Each person pays $29.50.
Change the people count to 5 and each share drops to $17.70 — useful when finding, awkwardly, that someone forgot to order water.

Frequently asked questions
Should the tip be on the pre-tax amount?
Traditionally, yes, in the US. Tipping on the tax inflates the tip slightly and benefits no one much, so most diners figure the percentage on the pre-tax bill.
What happens with a service charge?
Groups over a certain size are sometimes charged a service fee automatically. If so, ask the server how to treat it; many guests then add a smaller tip on top of or instead of the service fee.
Do I tip on tax and on a discount?
Most people tip on the discounted amount after coupons are applied, since that is what the meal cost. Opinion differs on gift certificates; check what feels fair to you.
