Why net worth matters
Your income tells you how much money flows in; your net worth tells you how much money you have kept. It adds up everything you could turn into cash — savings, investments, the value of a home, a car, anything saleable — and subtracts everything you owe against it, from the mortgage to the credit card.
The result is the truest measure of financial progress, because it ignores income alone and looks at the balance. Either paying down debt or building assets moves it up. Both matter, and this number rewards both.
It is worth recalculating on a schedule, say once a year. The habit turns an abstract goal into a figure you can watch improve, which is far more motivating than a vague resolve to save more.
The formula
Estimate property and car values at what you could actually get today, not what you paid. That keeps the number honest.
Worked example
Assets: $5,000 cash, $12,000 investments, home worth $300,000, other assets $8,000.
Liabilities: $180,000 mortgage, $6,000 loans.
Total assets = $325,000. Total liabilities = $186,000. Net worth = $139,000.
That number is the starting point people use to decide how aggressive they can be with saving, investing or paying extra into the mortgage.

Frequently asked questions
Is a car an asset?
Yes, but remember it is worth what you could sell it for today, not what you paid, and it falls in value every year. Count it at its honest current value and you keep the picture realistic.
Should my home count at market value?
Accounts do count it at its market value, precisely because it is something you own. Some people prefer conservative estimates; either way, be consistent across the years you calculate.
How often should I calculate my net worth?
Once a year is a good rhythm for most people. The point is the trend, not day-to-day bumps, so that is frequent enough to see progress and calm enough to measure a real change.
This calculator gives an estimate only and is not financial advice. Values depend on market prices and your records.
