How age is counted
Most of the time, "how old are you?" gets a lazy answer: the last birthday. This calculator counts the exact figure the way a contract would — complete years, then the months left over, then the days.
The method is straightforward. Take the birth date and the reference date. First count full years between them, then add full months since the last anniversary, then the remaining days. The result reads naturally, like "27 years, 4 months, 12 days".
Because the reference date defaults to today but can be set to anything, the tool works for future dates too — the day a lease ends, a retirement date, a child's 18th birthday.
The logic
Years are counted as complete 12-month spans, months as complete calendar months from the last anniversary, and days are the remainder. A birth date of 29 February is treated the way calendars treat it: anniversaries land on 28 February in non-leap years.
Worked example
Born 15 March 1998, referenced on 15 June 2026.
Age = 28 years, 3 months, 0 days, having lived about 10,315 days.
The days figure surprises people, which is a nice side effect: it makes the time real in a way years do not.

Frequently asked questions
How do I count someone's age before their birthday this year?
You do not subtract a year automatically. The calculator counts complete years from the actual date, so someone born in December who is 17 in January is simply 17 years and a month old. No rounding tricks needed.
Does the calculator handle time zones?
It counts calendar days only, ignoring the exact hour of birth. If the reference date is today, the day is your local day, so results match the calendar you see.
Can I use it for pets or objects?
Of course. It counts any date difference. For pets you will also want the pet years conversion, which the tool happily leaves to you to apply on top.
