Counting time worked
The calculator converts both times to minutes since midnight, subtracts the break, then converts back. If the end time is before the start, it assumes the shift ran past midnight and adds a full day. The result appears as hours and minutes, with the decimal form that payroll forms usually want.

Start 9:00, end 17:30, 30-minute break.
Elapsed = 8h 30m, minus break = 8h 0m (8.0 decimal hours).

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for a project or study session?
Yes. Any pair of times with an optional pause works: an exam, a deep-work block, a cooking timer, a parking meter. It counts minutes, not intentions.
What about days between times?
This tool assumes a single shift under 24 hours. For calendar-length spans between dates, use the Days Between Dates calculator, which counts full days.
How are seconds handled?
Time inputs round to the minute. If you enter seconds in the fields, they're ignored — payroll almost always works in minutes anyway.
This tool does the time arithmetic only. Actual paid time depends on your employer's break and rounding policies.
